UGANDA OUTREACH 2009 Name of the Project: HUMANITY AND COMPASSION FOR CHILDREN
BENEFICIARIES In Uganda, orphaned and internally displaced Children are suffering the most as they have been marginalized in the Ugandan culture for many centuries. They are regarded as creatures of no hope. In the history of the displaced children the females are obliged to marriage as an asset to settle debts that their brothers and elders have caused. They are thus seen as a major source of income to the family. Therefore, never really being treated as Human beings.
The displaced Children are: • Potential victims of rape, defilement and any brutal definition of child abuse. • HIV/AIDS orphans, handicapped, girls. • Destitute, albinos and Displaced Children. • Thousands of war children of northern Uganda CORE VISION/PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The objective of this outreach is to promote Vocational and Educational, Rehabilitation to the many children suffering from various displacements situations, and at the same time to be a program of Income generating for ongoing support and sustainability of the integrative initiatives. The ultimate goal of this Vocational educational outreach is to create the proper conditions to embrace and empower those children, previously regarded as unwanted and displaced to be included again on the social dynamics of the African societies and make then a valuable instrument of change and Prosperity. The Re-adaptation and re-integration process of those previously vulnerable displaced children is decisive agenda on the Economical community development of this region and vital to this target group.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE AREAS BEING ADDRESSED
The economy of northeast Uganda is dominated by pastoralism (cattle farming). Although agricultural production is apparent in some areas, this is normally a mixture known as "agro-pastoralism" (integrated cattle and crop farming). It should be noted that pastoralism is in decline due to the constant cattle raids by guerrilla groups such as the Lord's Resistance Army based in southern Sudan, as well as government and aid agency intervention which encourages the fencing off of land to discourage the traditional free-roaming of cattle. Uganda's economy is predominantly agrarian; 36% of the GDP, 81% of the employed labor force, and 31% of export earnings are derived from the agricultural sector. A total of 6,810,000 ha (16,828,000 acres), or one-third of the land area, is under cultivation. Subsistence production remains the pattern; 70% of the area under cultivation is used to produce locally consumed food crops.
PROJECT LOCATION Project Wampewo, LCI, Kasangati (Donated Land) Nangabo Sub-County 9 Miles from Kampala City Gayaza Road, Wakiso District Central Uganda, East Africa
This project has already received a donated free land to facilitate its establishment by the local community. The land size is 1 acre. However, there are numerous chances of increasing on this size after the project starts its operation. Location: Wampewo, LCI, Kasangati, Nangabo Sub-County, 9 Miles from Kampala City, Gayaza Road, Wakiso District, Central Uganda, East Africa
MISSION, GOALS, AND VISION The Uganda Outreach mission is to develop the symbiotic relationship between displaced children communities and their environment, ensuring that all are gifted with a sustainable horticultural/permaculture and chicken facility and a reliable legacy with which to improve health, productivity and quality of life, assuring the minimal conditions for survival, and the possibility to enact life changes.
DEVELOPMENT AND CREATION DEVELOPMENT STATUS
The model Farm as projected and described on this summary is on its planning stages. Nonetheless the viability and operability of the entire project has been proven to be sufficient, since some know-how on this area have been developed on a number of the actual functional Victory schools. The only limitation and expansion that those programs are facing right now is the sponsorship support.
SUBPROJECT 2: THE MODEL FARM PROJECT
Humanity Healing Foundation and Compassion for Children understands that the best way to support the enormous amount of children in dire need in Uganda is to develop a Model Farm, where the children can receive assistance, vocational orientation, some educational help , but foremost the possibility to restore hope and meaning to their lives.
SPECIFIC AND REALISTIC GOALS THAT ARE CLEARLY MEASURABLE The Social benefits of the materialization of this model farm are far beyond the costs involved on its development. some of them are listed below. • To deliver all practical skills of human sustainable development closer to the children at school in addition to class work. • To promote the nutrition cycle of the children as the eggs and chickens are be used in providing meals for an improved protein diet. • To ensure a timely support for the needy basing on the local available resources as the hens and eggs will act as the major source of daily income, to eradicate the spirit of dependence and promote self-sustainability of the beneficiaries. • While vegetable gardening makes a valuable contribution to food security, more food production and income generation interventions will be required in order to enable those children to acquire basic knowledge and educational on those specific technological skills. • To illustrate compassion and practical love for the war victims on a daily basis as more donations are gradually made. • To reduce malnutrition among war affected children and Ugandans in general. Hence, poultry is playing a large role in the agriculture development and human welfare. • To minimize over-straining in the day-to-day activities those require funding.
THE FEASIBILITY OF THE PROJECT :
• There is a very large land space donated already and adequate for the full operation of the project • The Farm Houses (Rearing Houses) will be constructed in the south of the Country where peace if eminent. • The Veterinary services are available from Makerere University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Pathology Department. • Uganda has a high demand for eggs and chickens. But in this regard, all the chickens will be sold to Hotels and Government Aided Schools that have illustrated great interest. The eggs will be exported to Rwanda and on a local market still. • This Project will provide $3,000 per month for 3 years. This implies that $108,000 will be yielded from the Project to support the neediest society of the war torn zone. • There is currently no project of this kind throughout the Country targeting this vulnerable group. The Uniqueness and originality of this program has been designed to serve as a Model to inspire new initiatives all over Uganda. • This Poultry Farm of 2000 chickens (broilers) is to cater for HIV/AIDS Orphans, albino girls, sexually abused girls who are regarded as outcasts and all war victims. • We have experienced workers (volunteers) who will attend to the chickens and monitor the progress of the project from the beginning of the operational phrase. • Materials like: Wheelbarrows, Tanks, Jerricans, Hoes, Spades, 16,000 Bricks are already available to facilitate in this Project. MODEL FARM PROJECT: PHASE 1
The Farm Project was originally conceived in phases that are independent but interconnected. This model was adopted in order to preview further expansions as it develops and consequently can enlarge itself to accommodate needs and variations of demands.
POULTRY/CHICKEN PROJECT The Poultry Farm project is part of sustainable agriculture/ microenterprise initiative. This project was developed for children who are displaced for reasons of War, Sexual traffic, or because they are HIV positive or have lost one or both parents to AIDS. The idea of this project is not a cure for AIDS, nor will it eradicate extreme poverty, neither transforms those children situation over night. What it may accomplish and what we have seen it do is offer the children we are assisting:
1. A supplemental income for medical and school fees 2. A supplemental diet for improved nutrition 3 The possibility to build an education on self sustainability 4. Empowerment and self reliance 5. Bringing back hope for the future and Possibilities
In our Understanding this project may provide a steady generation of income to help and support the social reintegration of thousand of War Children from North Uganda

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS Housing, Farm structure and Equipment:
HOUSING The original Poultry Farm project includes the construction of 4 independent types of buildings: The Brooder House, a Feed store, a culling House and 5 rearing Houses. A brooder is a building or room, which has the following features it can conserve heat being generated; i.e. it should not get cold quickly and can be sealed to keep out cold; will have adequate ventilation; e.g., windows and ventilators which can be opened and closed when necessary; it is leak proof; and the room allows for expansion as the chicks grow. The use of the brooder room will prevent rodents, the contact with vermin. The specific measures for this building will be 405cm2/per bird up to six weeks (for the laying chickens). Rearing Houses: (Five Houses) The ideal Rearing Houses of the project will be built to half walls and the rest to eaves made of wire netting. It is made of good roofing materials such as iron sheets to avoid leakage. They will be constructed in such a way that we minimize wetting on the inside by rain when the wind blows. The windward side will be the one where the short sides of the buildings face. However, we can even fix there an extra overhang or some material like gunnysacks, which we can draw down in case the rain is going to fall. Therefore, the above features form a Rearing House; Roof; solid Walls made of block; Foot Bath at the entrance, and a Wire Netting system. Culling House/Isolation Room Only 1 Culling Room on the farm will be constructed on each Rearing House so that the birds are not mixed from the five different houses. This is for disease control measure when some birds are suspected to be unproductive, injured for pecking, and sometimes sick. The birds in the latter conditions are kept in an isolation room/Unit or sickbay where they are closely watched and treated, unless otherwise destroyed in case of a contagious disease.
FARM STRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENT The farm structure and equipment of the project will include the following: nest boxes, feed troughs, water troughs, chicken handling crates, chick crates brooding equipment (as brooding shades) chick guards, de-beakers, rakes and others. This is part of the Project’s inputs. However, some of those equipments are only applicable to Layers.
Available Amount $13,205 Amount Requested $40, 000 Total Project Cost $53,205 Purpose Construct Chicken Farms and buy Chickens--
FUNCTION OF BY PRODUCTS One of the many by product of the extensive production on the Chicken facility is the by production of a reasonable amount of chicken manure. Animal manures have been used effectively as fertilizers for centuries. Poultry manure has long been recognized as perhaps the most desirable of these natural fertilizers because of its high nitrogen content. In addition, manures supply other essential plant nutrients and serve as a soil amendment by adding organic matter. Organic matter persistence will vary with temperature, drainage, rainfall, and other environmental factors. Organic matter in soil improves moisture and nutrient retention. The utilization of manure is an integral part of sustainable agriculture. Poultry manure is often produced in areas where it is needed for crop, hay and pasture fertilization. The increased size and frequent clean-out of many poultry operations potentially make poultry manure available in sufficient quantities and on a timely basis to supply most fertilization needs, which is an interesting integration and interface with all the methods of supporting and expanding the horticultural/ Garden /Farming.
SUBPROJECT 2: COMMUNITY GARDENS INTRODUCTION:
The agricultural sector is dominant in Uganda's economy . Whilst this sector grew at an annual average of only 3.7 percent over 1990-99 compared to the far more impressive growth of the industrial and service sectors, the importance of agriculture in Uganda's economy outweighs all other sectors put together. The agricultural sector employs 82 percent of the workforce, accounts for 90 percent of export earnings, and provided 44 percent of GDP in 1999. Moreover, the farmers in Uganda's 2.5 million smallholdings and scattered large commercial farms provide the majority of their own and the rest of the country's staple food requirements. Uganda is able to rely on agriculture due to the country's excellent access to waterways, fertile soils, and, (relative to many other African nations) its regular rainfall, although it does still suffer from intermittent droughts such as in 1993-94.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
The main objective with the implementation of Community Farming and gardening on the region where the displaced children are to implement a series of auxiliary and alternative methods of educational/vocational programs and allow the sustainability and self maintenance of the project in itself. Studies proved that the intensity of the training and the on-site support over a period of 12 months provides a solid platform for future self-reliance. The use of permaculture or permanent agriculture, would allow the development of a symbiotic relationship with the natural elements of the earth and the without being intrusive to the environment. Though reasonable planning, it is possible to develop a sustainable natural source management program, environmentally friendly without dilapidating the resources available and at the same time alleviating poverty and despair. As we introduce this enterprise to the community of Children and their mentors, we permit them access to environmentally-friendly agricultural technologies, offering resources and directive specialized training, building their capacity to reduce hunger and poverty. The focus on resource-efficient permaculture technologies transfers environmental awareness and skills that enable resource-poor food gardeners to still achieve good yields and reach a level that otherwise they would never had reached Using the simple principals of organic methods and permaculture on the Farming project, even where there is little agricultural know-how and technologies, still can be achievable to generate sustainable livelihoods for all the beneficiaries of this initiative. The Community Farming initiative was conceived to build upon the community capacity and confidence in their abilities to organize, implement, activate and participate in developmental interventions and take action to improve their own lives and the lives of those in the same community. The monitored and rationally organic use of the land plan promotes sustainable natural resource management and environmentally-friendly agriculture in order to achieve improved, food-rich environments in many poor communities. This Program includes teaching and employing resource-efficient permaculture principles and techniques, and focusing on water and soil conservation, conscious use of the resources available and respect for the environment and its Bio-interactions. “GREEN” AS AN UTILITY FACTOR
PERSPECTIVES AND SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROJECT
While vegetable and fruit gardening would make a significant contribution to food security, more food production and income generation interventions will be required for programming and expansion of this project. We observe that the sustainability of this program may depend on the capability of the community to develop and expand the food production beyond the level of mere subsistence of the community. The enduring impact is reliant on community members' enthusiasm and capacity to keep applying their educational training, maintaining their gardens, and expanding their food production beyond subsistence. The fact that the project was set originally in the context of a motivated, responsible group somewhat may mitigate the potential risk. EXTERNAL RISKS Any Agricultural project or initiative have inherent risks of crash or malfunction due to the action of disease, pests and weather, and consequently the Model farm would count on the possibilities of these occurrences. The same way, There is always an inherent risk in volunteer groups of possible dissension amongst community members affecting the project's implementation and outcomes.
PROJECTED LIFE CHANGE The entire Outreach Program and particularly the Model Farm hold the depth, intensity and stability in that it has the potential to impact positively and consequently to ripple on the economic, social, psychological, physical and vocational aspects of the beneficiaries’ lives. Allowing the displaced children to be actively participants of the instrument of collective change can have a strong effect of personal empowerment, the sense of belonging to a social community therefore leading them to be again a vital part of the fabric of this community. The emphasis of this initiative is INTEGRATION, thus making possible the interaction of the children with a variety of different generational elements of the community: teachers, volunteers, prospective consumers, and potential employers.
